700 billion dollars
2021 was a record year for the venture capital industry. In a nutshell, VC firms invest money in startups to make the biggest possible profit on an exit. They evaluate company and product ideas, pitch decks and their creators. Sometimes it just needs only $15000 for an app as a nucleus. It is not uncommon for so-called unicorns to emerge. These are companies whose market value is estimated at over $1 billion.
The heart of the American VC scene beats in Silicon Valley. More precisely, in Palo Alto. The sometimes very unimpressive wooden houses hide the fact that behind the doors gigantic sums of money are invested in ideas. Companies like Shopify, Dropbox, WhatsApp and Zoom started out that way.
In total, VC firms in the U.S. made over $770 billion in exits in 2021. That's about the same or more than the GDP in 2021 of countries like: Saudi Arabia, Turkey or Switzerland.
Bastian shot this little essay during a family visit in Palo Atlo in fall 2022. These partly very inconspicuous buildings are home to major decisions about big money and even sometimes to some society changing ideas. The contrast between “these neat little houses” and mind-blowing amounts of money were an invitation to Bastian to take a closer look at.

Sie evaluieren Firmen- und Produktideen, Pitch Decks und deren Verfasser. Die Gründer eines Start Ups sind darauf angewiesen mit manchmal nur 15000 $ für eine App als Nukleus zu starten. Nicht selten kommen dabei sogenannte Einhörner heraus. Das sind Firmen deren Marktwert mit über 1 Milliarde $ bewertet wird.

Bastian hat dieses kleine Essay während eines Familienbesuchs in Palo Alto im Herbst 2022 aufgenommen. Hinter den Wänden dieser mitunter sehr unscheinbaren Gebäuden werden große Entscheidungen über viel Geld getroffen und manchmal sogar gesellschaftsverändernde Ideen erdacht. Der Kontrast zwischen diese “niedlichen kleinen Häusern” und den schwindelerregenden Geldbeträgen waren Grund genug für Bastian da einmal genauer drauf zu schauen.
